In the wake of the shooting at a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado, in which 12 were killed and more than 50 were injured, stars continued to take to express their shock, dismay and condolences for the victims and their families.

Swedish House Mafia's Steve Angello, who is set to appear at Global Dance Festival in the nearby city of Morrison, Colorado, issued a statement to MTV News to express his grief. "I'd like to express my deepest condolences to the families of those affected by the horrible events in Aurora, Colorado," Angello wrote. "It's unfair that so many precious lives were lost in this tragedy and during a leisure activity that so many of us participate in every day. Tonight's performance at Global Dance Festival is dedicated to the memory of those we lost in Aurora, Colorado."

"I'm terribly sad to hear about what happened in Aurora, Co. last night, my thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this tragedy," "New Girl" actress Zooey Deschanel tweeted. "Rock of Ages" actress Julianne Hough wrote, "My love & prayers are with all the families that have been affected by the horrible, unspeakable torment from last nights shooting! #BeKind."

"Praying for the victims and families of those involved in the shooting in Colorado. My heart is broken. So awful. God Bless... " Jessica Simpson wrote. Cobie Smulders, who appeared in another of the summer's splashy superhero movies, "The Avengers," was similarly bereft. "My heart goes out to the families involved in the horrific tragedy in Aurora Colorado. I just can't believe it," she wrote.

Filmmaker Michael Moore, whose 2002 Academy Award-winning documentary "Bowling for Columbine" explored violence in America through the lens of the 1999 school shooting, was left near-speechless by Friday's events. "Too sad at the moment to comment," he wrote.

"Waking up to the tragic news of Aurora, CO and I am speechless and so unbelievably sad. I send prayers and love to everyone involved," "Step Up" actress Jenna Dewan wrote.

Meanwhile, some called for gun control reform in light of the shooter's artillery, which included a rifle, shotgun and handgun.

"Awful news about the Colorado Dark Knight shooting. Thoughts go out to all the victims. #GunControlNow," wrote "How to Make It in America" actor Bryan Greenberg.

Others just didn't understand.

"I just don't understand y. Prayers to the family/friends," tweeted "Glee" actress Amber Riley. Comedian Patton Oswalt wrote, "Horrifying. What the f--- is wrong with our GODDAMNED SPECIES sometimes? #colorado"
